Sonia Allan is a musician and an actor, passionate about performing and helping others to gain confidence through music education. Sonia specialises in helping beginners - both children and adults - find a fun and expressive way into music.
Sonia studied violin in Australia under Mr Yasuki Nakamura, one of the original students of Japanese violinist Shinichi Suzuki in the Suzuki method of teaching. This method is based on providing a nurturing environment for students and helping students develop a great ear for music – students are encouraged to listen regularly to beautiful recordings of the music they are playing, and to sing the melodies they will play on their instrument.
At the same time Sonia studied piano with Mrs Nada Brissenden, co-founder of Suzuki Education in Australia.
Sonia has a B.A in Theatre and Media from Charles Sturt University. With 8th Grade Piano and Violin levels through the Australian Music Examinations Board, Sonia has composed and arranged music for ensembles, and used a combination of her acting, singing and violin playing skills for a range of theatre productions in Australia and the UK.
Sonia was a singer with professional cabaret group Lady Sings it Better in Australia, and has taught a range of music performance classes at Jigsaw Performing Arts in London.
In 2014 Sonia acted as a consultant to Grazebrook Primary School in Stoke Newington, helping to establish an exciting new Music Enrichment Programme for talented students.
"...Classes with Sonia are just fun! I never leave without learning something new and my skills and confident have improved very much since we started almost two years ago. I highly recommend her as a teacher! " (Paula)
"...Sonia has been a brilliant teacher this last two years. I've really benefitted from her knowledge and enthusiasm and she's got me from a complete novice to being able to play a range of tunes. She's always finding new ways of practising that might be useful, but also what i really appreciate is that she listens to what you want to learn and be able to play." (Fiona)
"...Sonia is my 8 year old daughters piano teacher. She has been for over a year now. My daughter loves her weekly lessons with her. Right from the beginning I expressed my wish for my daughters lessons to be fun and engaging as most people my age have bad memories of their piano lessons, they seem to be remembered as a chore. She took that on board and some. I feel Sonia thinks outside the box. Her lessons aren’t just following a “learn piano†book. She encourages My daughter to write lyrics and listen to songs in different ways. She experiments with games and involves apps too. I think Sonia is really creative in her teaching and would and have recommended her whole heartily." (Lizzy)
"...Sonia is a wonderful teacher - kind, patient and always adapting her teaching to best suit how I learn. I was a complete beginner and as a mature student was a little anxious, but Sonia quickly put me at ease. I’d highly recommend her." (Charli)
